Tuesday’s guest blogger is Rachel from Mommy Needs a Vacation.

Rachel and I “met” on Twitter. She’s always making me laugh and her blog is full of awesome! She recently received the incredible gift of her niece being born on her birthday- yay!

I am so excited to be guest posting over here at Adventuroo today with Melissa! She rocks and we share a love for the outdoors!! I can usually be found blogging over at Mommy Needs a Vacation because let’s face it, I NEED a vacation. I mean who doesn’t?

As a California girl, I love to be outside. I lived in CT for 3 years and one chapped behind and a few freezing winters later, I am back to living in CA where I hope to stay. I am not kidding about the chapped behind thing. I seriously had a RED/CHAPPED Boooo-tay the 1st winter I lived there. It was not pretty.

See here is the thing; I think it is so much easier to be a stay-at-home mom if you can get OUTSIDE with the kids at least once a day. It doesn’t have to be some extravagant outdoor activity. It can be as simple as riding tricycles around the block. Going to the park. Going on a nature walk. And the best part of getting outside with your kids: they usually nap better and sleep better at night.

One of the outdoor activities that we love to do with our kids is work outside in the garden. They love to dig in the dirt, use the shovel, help plant seeds and of course pick the vegetables. I have my wonderful husband to thank for this. He comes from a fabulous family of gardeners. And thankfully because of this my kids love gardening too!

And because of all of this hard work with the kids in the garden, we get beautiful vegetables such as these:

If we can get out there and put our kids to work, I know you can too! I mean how great is it that we are teaching them how to grow their own food? Makes me do the happy dance!

Great post! You are right. It doesn’t need to be complicated. Just get outside. The kids love it. I’d have to agree that California is a great place to be for year-round outdoor fun.

I am way ahead of the game with the weather here. It is MUCH easier to get outside. And we also have a garden year-round which keeps the kids busy!

Your timing could not have been more perfect. In NC, we are dying from the heat and humidity! It’s no fun to not be able to do anything outdoors with your kids. Even the pool hasn’t been fun because the sun is too intense and the water is just too warm. Yesterday we were in the lower 90s and I felt like ww could come out of hibernation a little!

That kind of weather makes it so hard to get outside!! Hopefully it keeps getting better so you can get out there!

Great photos!! My 4 year old currently loves going to our garden to dig out early carrots. Here in MT, we have a very short growing season, but we’re still having loads of fun — especially as my 4 year old helped plant the seeds. It’s interesting to see what is coming up where :)

Great post!! I’m so jealous of your gorgeous garden! We’re having trouble getting much of anything to grow in this HEAT. And your little ones are just beautiful. Looks like they really enjoy being outside. I totally agree — getting them outside is a must!

Thank you! I think they are pretty beautiful too! Believe me, I know in that wicked heat it is so hard to get outside!! When it is like that here, I set up the water table in the shade and let them splash away!

What a fantastic pick for a guest poster! Standing up and giving you a huge bravo. I firmly believe that it’s important to get your kids outside. And working. I love that you nurture a garden together!

Love this post! The kids & I just planted our first veggie garden this spring & it has been a lot of fun watching it grow. We recently added flowers, too, which just make me happy. Living in Los Angeles, it can be tough to feel “connected” with nature sometimes, so creating a beautiful outdoor space is important.

Great article. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting a garden for a couple of years now though I’ve never actually gone through with it due to my ineptitude in that area. However I think I’ll give it a shot next year and my two boys can help me out.

My little man just turned 3. He loves to help watering, picking, putting the rocks in the bottom of the pots. He also likes to direct me in what plants I should photograph! He loved the flowers esp. He is not allowed to pick them tho! The garden is a great place for us to go over colors.
