This is my HUNDREDTH post. 1-0-0.
While it may seem like small potatoes to all you bloggie veterans out there, for me it’s huge!
You see, I started this blog in the middle of my second pregnancy after months of worrying that if I started this thing, that I’d be doomed to one day post the ubiqutous “Sorry I haven’t posted lately…” I’m proud to say that I haven’t needed that (yet), even when I gave birth to Little Roo, to which I give no apologies for not posting for a week. I figured you guys would cut me some slack there.
So, now that I’m here at 100 posts, I easily have 100 MORE posts crammed up there in my brain. Unfortunately, they aren’t leaving much room for remembering where I placed my keys or what to buy at the store.
I’m stoked to keep writing. I’m thrilled that you keep reading. And, in honor of the occasion, I wanted to share with you 100 things I’ve learned about blogging (and all that goes with it).
- I’m really glad my blog name starts with A and not Z. I wish I could say this was on purpose.
- I had no idea I would ever have to introduce myself as “Adventuroo” instead of Melissa.
- I am grateful my original blog name choices weren’t available as a domain name.
- People just aren’t going to magically find your blog. You have to work your A off to promote yourself (even as a professional marketer, I underestimated this).
- Everyone said running a blog takes LOTS of time. I didn’t know how right they were (another underestimation).
- I really, really love getting comments.
- Correction: I really, really love getting comments, EXCEPT the ones that say “Great blog! Come follow me at www.itsallaboutme.com!!!!”
- Sometimes the posts I spend the most time on are the ones that get the least comments.
- A photo, even a stock photo, makes a post all that more interesting.
- Tinker: what a blogger does to their blog all the time.
- Daydreaming: what a blogger does when they aren’t tinkering but want to be.
- CommentLuv is my favorite plug-in and I love when other sites have it too.
- Plug-ins get updated every 1.5 seconds.
- Installing a favicon sounds like it’s easy, but somehow I’ve made it difficult.
- My blog took a different direction than I originally thought it would but one that I thoroughly enjoy.
- My family reads my blog less than “strangers.”
- I find great joy in using tags to cleverly add extra thoughts to my blog posts, like tags that say “things that don’t make sense” or “as if you wanted to know.”
- I enjoy reading others’ funny tags even more.
- You’ve gotta pick and choose what communities to be involved in; otherwise, you’ll be overwhelmed.
- An RSS reader is the only way I can even REMOTELY keep up with my favorite blogs.
- Dividing my blogs into categories within my RSS majorly helps me accomplish #20.
- Apparently, getting a nasty comment means you’ve “made it big.” I’ve only had nice ones so far.
- Spam is humorous and annoying at the same time.
- A spam filter is ESSENTIAL, unless you want posts like “The dear author, thanks you for a vital topic!” on your comments.
- There are so many bloggers with FAR superior writing than me.
- I am still a stickler for spelling and grammar, even in an online world of TMI, IRL and kthxbai. KWIM?
- Meme is pronounced MEEM.
- I can spot another Thesis themed blog a mile away.
- I feel automatically bonded to other Thesis bloggers. I hope they don’t have a problem with this.
- Linking a post from Twitter a few times a day (with varying teasers) drives more traffic.
- Twitter is where I learn the most… about everything.
- It’s easy to get obsessed with looking at Google Analytics.
- I never thought someone would find my blog by typing into Google: “married having kids and wanting to bar hop instead of taking care of kids”
- Or by searching “melissa secret love sandal worldwide buy”
- Or my personal favorite: “pictures of little 10 year old boys fattening up over time quickly in timeframes”
- #Blogchat on Sunday nights on Twitter is worth jumping into.
- My professional experience in marketing comes in handy.
- Even so, I still have a lot to learn about the blogging world.
- There are so many AWESOMELY awesome bloggers out there that I’d love to meet IRL.
- I have met many LOCAL bloggy friends and they are just as kick ass in real life.
- I regularly choose blogging over working out. This is bad.
- Twitter is the best way to make new blogging friends.
- BlogFrog is a close second.
- Ideas for blog posts come to me at the most random times.
- So I don’t forget, iPhone Notes, post-its and a good ole pen and paper come in handy.
- The #playoutdoors group on Twitter always has the best articles about getting kids outside.
- Having a topic you’re passionate about goes a long way.
- You’ll get crappy pitches from PR firms who have never even looked at your site.
- You’ll get awesome pitches that turn into great partnerships.
- I’m proud that I said no to those in #48.
- Some of the recipes passed on from fellow bloggers have been some of my favorites.
- I didn’t know that nicknaming my hubby “Daddy Roo” would get him called this at his office.
- I find myself referring to my kids as Big Roo and Little Roo.
- You don’t need to try to be all things to all people.
- Blog in a way that shows off your personality.
- Conferences are all the rage in the blog universe.
- Some bloggers get really nervous about going to conferences.
- You apparently go to conferences for the mingling, not the sessions.
- Maybe I’m a dork, but I’d still be interested in the sessions.
- Incorporating Flickr into your blog is hard (still haven’t figured out the best way to do this or even if I want to).
- The SITS girls is a great way to increase the number of comments you get on your blog (and to discover new blogs to comment on yourself).
- Interacting genuinely with your readers makes them want to return.
- Giveaways are time consuming to promote.
- But they’re very rewarding when some who truly deserves to win does.
- I don’t enter giveaways that REQUIRE me to subscribe to something or to annoy my Facebook friends by posting about their contest.
- Simpler is better… a good mantra for just about everything blogging related.
- It’s OK to unsubscribe to a blog if you don’t enjoy it anymore.
- You’re not going to want to blog every day. This is ok too.
- Recommending great blogs to your friends is a great way to pay it forward.
- Discovering a cool blog is like finding the best local hangout in a tourist town.
- Sometimes writing a post about something you want to achieve is a great motivator.
- Other times, it doesn’t work so hot.
- Laying out what posts you want to make for the week helps you draw a blank when you’re all frazzled mid-week.
- Parenting comes before blogging.
- I’m most creative in the evening after the kids or asleep.
- It’s easy to stay up WAY too late to get a post just right.
- The kids don’t care you were up late blogging; they will still wake up at 6:15 am.
- Blogging with a newborn in the house is kinda hard, not to mention insane.
- But it’s a great way to preserve a birth story.
- I still haven’t gotten the hang of being an affiliate through share-a-sale or others (and I’m not sure if I want to).
- I can’t quite figure out how to use StumbleUpon to drive traffic either.
- Vlogging would be kinda cool to do, but that word is just heinous-sounding.
- Sometimes posts take a lot longer to write than you ever think it will.
- This post is one of them.
- I learn something new about blogging every day.
- Sometimes you have to surprise readers by doing something unexpected in your posts.
- Like not having a list of 100 things.

I LOVED this! All so true especially 18, 41, 68 and 77.
Hope you had a good time last weekend! We missed you at lunch.
LOVE THIS POST. Funny, true and informative all at the same time.

Great list of “almost” 100 things. They are all great and so true. My motto is to fake it so no one will realize you have no idea what you’re doing until you can figure it out.
That is definitely good advice! I think people can sense confidence in a blog, even a new one.
Congrats on 100! I recently posted my 100th post too! I did 100 things about me instead. I’ll re-read this when I have a few more minutes. How exciting!! Way to go!
Congrats on your 100th post too!
Congratulations on your 100th post! Regarding #24, I like to approve those so I feel like I have more comments.
Yes, it will definitely give you a comment boost! LOL

This is a great post ~ come visit me at http://www.fernaaysfamily.blogspot.com!
I wish I was that popular to have to worry about those types of comments, but it’s still early, I’ll be patient!! Thanks for the info on Twitter, although I have to admit, I am a little scared ~ I have an addictive personality when it comes to social networks!! Thanks for all the good tips!! Congratulations on hitting 100!!
Wait just joking, I had to put that in there
Well I hate to break it to you but Twitter is VERY addictive. It’s also very fun too!

Ok…I’m one step closer to trying it, but I have to admit, I haven’t a clue how it works!! I’ll do some research!!
you’re a wealth of knowledge, Mel – congrats on 100 posts!

I love this. You should re-post it in smaller chunks so we can talk about them all
For now though, I love the categories too. One of my favorite bloggers has categories called “Mean Cows on the Internet” and “Girls Who Eat Their Feelings.” That always makes me laugh even though she doesn’t post in them very often.
I am very interested in the seminars. And ARE YOU GOING to TypeAMom?
I am not a fan of vlogging at all. I can read much faster than people can talk – so I get bored just sitting there listening.
So there. Congrats on 100!!!
Oh now those categories are HILARIOUS. I wish I were going to Type A mom! Thanks for the congrats… and for being the catalyst for me meeting all these awesome local bloggers!

I love this list! Congrats on 100! And I had NO idea that it was MEEM. How embarrassing for me
I didn’t know it was MEEM at first either. I think there’s mass confusion so I’m sure you did no harm.

First, congrats to you on 100 posts! I love that you are always trying new things. This blogging thing is hard work & I agree that writing what you’re passionate about is key. I’m thankful for the wonderful #playoutdoors community and for meeting people like you. I look forward to reading more of your wonderful posts! BTW, you inspired me to call my kids the big & little explorer!
You’re too sweet! And I didn’t know I was the inspiration for that… it works so perfectly for your blog!
Congratulations on hitting your 100th post! That’s awesome.
I love your list of “100″ things you learned about blogging. I’d like to add one of my own if you don’t mind: I learned that commenting on a CAPTCHA enabled blog on Blogger is a huge pain in the butt. lol
Thanks so much for stopping by my place again. I love receiving comments from you. They never say “great post come and visit me at adventuroo.com”. lol Have a great day.

@TweetingMama
I’m so glad I can be a good commenter– I’ll keep it up then.
And you’re so right about CAPTCHA. So, so right.

Congrats on hitting 100 posts!!!
And I refuse to say it this way: “Meme is pronounced MEEM.”
See, my MIL is called Memere (French, for Grandma) and we shorten it to meme (not me me – hard E, but may-may) and so I have to say it the same way. It’s just how my head is wired!!
Congrats, again!
I’m sure it would get confusing if you said Meme then. You’re excused!

Congrats on hitting 100! I loved that you didn’t make it to 100 on your list. Every time I try to do a list, I get halfway and get stumped!
Thanks girl! I don’t know if I would have ever finished this post if I didn’t have a LONG car ride to Atlanta and back this weekend. Seriously.
LOL! Love the not-100 list. Funny! Also totally agree with the “love your blog visit it’s all about me!) SOOO true. I haven’t had any nasty comments yet either, so Iguess I haven’t made it big!
Congrats on 100 posts!
Thanks for the list. I can’t figure out stumbleUpon either.
Nice post Mel. Can I admit I didn’t read all 87 items on your list? lol Actually I’m very impressed you came up with that many. I add to the 100 post congrats! Definitely something worth celebrating!

Love this! Found myself nodding — and taking notes — throughout.
And, for the record, I have NO IDEA what meme is. But now I can pronounce it, thanks to you!
Glad I could stick in some helpful ones in there! I’ll explain meme’s tomorrow. I’ll give you a hint though- Wordless Wednesday is a meme, ahem- MEEEEEM.
This was a fun read. I agree about the links in Twitter, that is how I find all my blogs to read, and I believe that is how I get most of my traffic. I still have no clue what RSS is, apparently it is very helpful?
Congrats on your 100th post.
An RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication– it’s basically a way for you to pass along your content to those people who subscribe to it. Most blogs should have a way for you to enable it. If someone clicks on your RSS button (it’s typically an orange square with two curved lines through it), they can subscribe to your blog from an RSS reader (Google Reader is the most popular). Your blog posts then come into their Reader- kinda like an inbox for email. It’s awesome because instead of me visiting 50 blogs, I ca subscribe to them and just go to my reader to read posts. If I want to comment, I just click on the article title and it takes me to their page.
Wow Melissa,
That’s quite a list. So many people can totally relate to most of these items.
FYI: I’d love to see a post just about Twitter. I started to get into Twitter (for about 5 minutes), totally didn’t “get it”, and walked away to do the hundred things that seemed more important to do. But now that Twitter doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, maybe it’s time to revisit it? Can you help?
Funny you should mention it. I’m starting a new section of my blog soon for tips just like using Twitter. Stay tuned!
I loved reading these, even if there were only 87;) Found you on blog frog…still trying to figure this all out as I am new to the blog world. Your list was really helpful to me…some things I didn’t even know about. I’m there with you on #75 and 77
Congratulations on your 100 posts! Here’s to 100 more!
Hi! Great idea for post. I will use it but I have only 28 post! It is stupid thing to write post “28 things that I’ve learned about blogging”
. All the best
Your list is awesome! I love the blog!
Hahaha I love it!! So many of those were so true, it had me laughing!
Congrats on your 100th post!!

I love your list! So many of those are so true and I think we can all relate to them. Congrats on your 100th post!
This is an awesome post!!! If I had it to do over again, I would totally start my name with an A. S is for sucks!
I loved that last part about surprising the blogger in some way, and then leaving off on shorter than 100. Genius! Seems like you are in fact getting comments for this one, which is good because making a gigantic list like that must have taken a long time.
I am new to blogging myself, so you’ve already taught me a couple things. I never knew how to produce meme for one, I always pronounced it Mem, not Meem. Why couldn’t it just be called Meem, then we’d all know.
I never knew IRL, even though you didn’t mention it, this is the first time in I don’t know how many blogs I realize it’s In Real Life.
Too bad I didn’t realize the A thing either, but I guess R hasn’t done so bad. Or has it?

Wow, I feel like I’m the last person to read this post. But it’s AWESOME and now I know we are truly on the same blogging level. And I mean that in the humblest way. I wanted to comment on some of the individual things but you have too many comments now and I’d have to keep scrolling back and forth. I’ll print and we’ll discuss at the next outing. Now excuse me while I tweet the heck out of this.
You’re way too sweet! I’d love to discuss this stuff, lady!
A mutual IRL friend told me about your blog! And I love #45. My iPhone is a serious blog tool. I like using voice memo to remember the hilarious conversation immediately afterwards. However I always feel weird if this is occurring as I’m walking down the street. By myself.
Awesome- thanks for the visit! Yes, I love my iPhone for that too. I use notes and talk into the voice memo a lot. Hey- we may look like crazy people but we’re taking good notes!
I realized how much of a blog geek I have become after my eyes glanced over to your sidebar and saw ’100 Things I’ve Learned About Blogging’ and my heart skipped a beat =)
Awesome List!
I’ve just started reading your blog, but I checked this post out from the sidebar first! Number 9 is so, so true!
Congratulations on getting to 100! I remember all the thoughts and discussions while getting this up and running and it’s nice to see that you’ve come this far…and will only go further. Also, I know I’m not family, but I love reading your blogs! Can’t wait to come visit soon.
P.S. Come follow me at http://www….just kidding
.
XOXO
What a creative idea! I love it!
If you one day do get a nasty comment, take a deep breath, picture the person as someone who just had the worst day possible and is taking it out on you, and then respond. I find that I’m kinder when I do this AND I keep a reader who won’t sharpen their nails on the next post.

Not quite 100, but still one heck of a list! I thought I was the only one whose friends and family never read my blog (they say they’ll check it out, then avoid it like the plague!)
I followed your link on twitter and had a good time reading this post!
The searches on Google that led people here are so funny.
I just found your blog a few weeks ago. I think it was through a comment you left on a blogfrog community….Anyway, I love it!

Congrats with the 100th post! I am almost halfway there at 46
but I will make it eventually! Your post is actually helpful as there is SO much to learn, even IF you didn’t make it to 100, lol! I like your style!
Congrats to you!
For Stumbleupon, try stumbling your own posts and then find similar things that are on there that are recommended by other people, then favor those things. This will make it more likely for your posts with a similar theme to get popped up for others that are interested in those topics.

Ended up here after a referral from Marian librarian. I’m a fan after reading 2 posts! I found myself laughing and agreeing with many of the items from this list – like paying way too much attention to google Analytics; or laughing at the searches that find your own blog; or staying up way too late working on a post. See you soon.

I love how these things make blogging seem like a community (you know, how after each one I’m like – I’m on Thesis – I feel like that! – I don’t understand StumbleUpon!)
And the end is hilarious.
Heehee- glad you liked it.
Since this post, I’ve used StumbleUpon a good deal and it’s providing some nice traffic to my site! Check out my friend’s post about it. It may help you out if you’re looking to get into it.

8 and 77 were my favorites. I think about half way thru this year I realized that the posts I thought would get the most traffic rarely got any. And, sometimes the posts that took only seconds have some of my best numbers. Guess blogging keeps me on my toes that way.
Love your blog!
I came from #81 and I am glad that I did. I enjoy many of your posts. At first, since I was already sucked into Adventuroo and then Momcomm, and had been spending way too much time ‘off-task’ when I found 100 things…I was not sure that I wanted to read all 100, but I definitely wanted to learn, so I began reading. Funny when I got to the end, I was both surprised in a funny way, and bummed! Darn. What were the other 13 I thought…

Nice family! Are you going for alittle girl? that would make your family complete.
I am SO new to the internet marketing gig that there were several items on your list that I still know nothing about.
I was ‘sold’ into giving it a ‘college try’ with phrases like…Only 10 hours a week is all you need so #5 is GOLDEN
#14 especially touched my heart since installing my Favicon brought me to tears and convinced me that I was way too much of an ‘old dog’ to learn new tricks. It seemed so easy yet…
#76 for me links directly to #5 cause so many times during my ’10 hours a week’ I looked up from research, writing, or tinkering and it was 4 or 5am.
Thanks for helping me to feel normal through my growing period and continued success as you make your way towards your 200th post!
