Every family has traditions. They’re usually focused around holidays or other special occasions.
But what about outdoor traditions? Do you have a yearly camping trip? A goal to see a new National Park each year?
Ours is a simple one.
Each year we go on a Mother’s Day hike.
It started when Big Roo was about 15 months old when we lived in Arizona.
The second year, we barely got out of the freaking house. But I proclaimed, “We should make this our tradition, dang it.”
This year, we added Little Roo to the mix.

Three Mother’s Day hikes, three years in a row. I say this is the beginning of a bona fide TRADITION.
Do you have an outdoor tradition? Tell me!

This was the first year I asked to spend Mother’s Day outside, and strawberry picking it was! Our outdoor tradition is easy — we spend at least a week every summer in our cabin in Yosemite. So many memories I can’t even pick a favorite!

I have some things that I didn’t really realize were traditions until I thought about them. We live about 200-300 ft from the Neuse River. We have to hike through the woods behind our house to get there and during the summer it would be a major expedition. Every winter though, we make the trek through the woods to see the river. It makes it easy to notice things like tree bark or seeing the owls perched up high or the deer tracks down to the river. And of course, pumpkin picking every fall. Hoping to make gardening and soon strawberry picking an annual thing!

We have a new one, since moving to California. Since we don’t have any family here, every Thanksgiving we go camping at the beach. The weather is (knock on wood!) always nice and there are always plenty of campsites available. It’s a great time!

This last Mother’s Day we started a tradition of walking on a Rails to Trails path in a neighboring city. In the past we would go out to brunch, but I found this experience to be more refreshing.
In a sense, we have a daily tradition of taking a family walk or hike everyday during the spring/summer months. During Christmas vacation we skate on the lake at our cottage.
