The Winter Wonderland that Never Was

by melissa on December 20, 2009

The weather prediction for the weekend– snow! Beautiful, white, glorious snow!

What we really got here in Raleigh, NC? Cold rain and lots of it.

Talk about a let down.

That’s not to say we didn’t get ANY snow. I was hopeful on Friday when daycare said they were closing an hour early and I already knew some public schools had shut down at lunch. I even worked from home on Friday just so I wouldn’t get stuck in Durham when the snowfall started. At around 2:00, I looked out the window and saw white beauties falling from the sky, gently touching the back porch and sticking. Promising I thought.

But that lasted all of 20 minutes and then it was over. Later on, the rain started. Like we don’t get enough of that!

That night, the weatherpeeps revised the forecast to say that rain would turn to freezing rain in the middle of the night and by 9 am the snow would start. So, I went to bed hoping to wake up and watch the snow start to fall as I sipped my morning coffee.

I woke up and went to check the porch. Surely, there’d be a glistening from the ice that had built up overnight. It was glistening alright, but it was rain puddling in the middle of the wooden beams, NOT ice.

And that’s the way the rest of Saturday went. Rain, rain and more rain. There were slight flurries around lunchtime but by then I knew not to get my hopes up.

There would be no building a little snowman with Big Roo.

No snowball fights.

No watching our dog Trajan pounce through the snow in his figure-8 run around the yard.

And no fun wintery pictures capturing all the action.

No, none of that. At least not this time.

What’s the weather like where you are? Are you in any sort of Winter Wonderland? One of my sisters lives in DC area so I think she stole all of ours! So much for the “learning to share” lesson our parents taught us when we fought over My Little Ponies.

Hah! In all my years (1987-92) in NC, I don’t remember it snowing – but I sure remember the wet, cold. And, 20 years ago today, I remember it being 17-degrees and freezing rain.

I agree — the weekend weather was a huge letdown! I had Small Fry all geared up to build her first snowman, then had to explain on Saturday morning why we couldn’t do it. Dang rain!

(Our neighbors actually piled their kids and sleds into the car on Saturday and drove to the in-laws’ house in Burlington b/c they had snow!)

Awww.. sorry to hear about your crummy weather! If it makes you feel any better, we’ve also been getting some real seasonal weirdness around here. It feels anti-Canadian (I’m in Ontario) to say that our December has been nearly snow-free, but man, it has! Most of our snow has turned quickly to rain, or that weird brown-slush-stuff at the edge of roads. Not exactly Wonderland. But we shall forge ahead! Here’s hoping for some of the fluffy stuff where you are – have a great week ahead!

I am sorry I wish I could send our snow your way!

I truly believe I am the only snow hater!

Could be “worse” … there’s no such thing as winter in SoCal, except when it rains or the temp drops below 70 degrees! Sorry your snow plans got busted! :)
